It’s Watermelon Festival time down in beautiful Hampton County, South Carolina this week.
The lovely Lowcountry community has been holding a celebration of all things watermelon since the 1940s.
At that time, Hampton County called itself the “Watermelon Capital of the World,” and it may well have been.
Trains pulling boxcars loaded with sweet, delicious Hampton County watermelons shipped regularly to points up and down the East Coast all summer long.
Markets have changed over the years, and while the demand for Hampton County watermelons isn’t quite as heavy as it once was, the Watermelon Festival has become a beloved tradition, drawing crowds from far and wide. There’s also a fishing tournament, kids parade, and a popular street dance that in the past has featured bands playing on both ends of Lee Avenue at the same time!
Saturday is the big day, with the annual Gala Parade through Hampton and Varnville.
The late Sen. Storm Thurmond once said you couldn’t get elected to statewide office in South Carolina unless you made an appearance at the Hampton County Watermelon Festival. To this day, state and even national political figures can be seen in Hampton on parade day.
